What is a Podcast?
Wikipedia
defines a podcast as: A podcast is a multimedia file distributed
over the Internet using syndication feeds, for playback on
mobile devices and personal computers. The term as originally
coined by Ben Hammersley in an article in the Guardian on
February 12, 2004, was meant as a portmanteau of "broadcasting"
and "iPod".
The term podcast, like 'radio', can mean both the content and
the method of delivery. The host or author of a podcast is often
called a podcaster. Though podcasters' web sites may also offer
direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is
distinguished from other digital audio formats by its ability to
be downloaded automatically using software capable of reading
feeds like RSS or Atom.
What is so great about podcasting?
Well, first off, for the most part the content is free. Another thing
is that you have such a wide range of podcasts on almost any subject, chances
are if you are a professional or a hobbyist or have a passion for something,
there is a podcast specifically looking for you! If you ever imagined
being a radio DJ or just felt like you had something to say, podcasting gives
everyone a equal level to distribute their content.
Podcasting is making its way through the commercial business level, in
education, and even in corporate environments. There is no telling how
well this new technology will be adopted, presently the trends are up.
Best way to find out if you are ready to become a podcaster, is to listen to a
few shows. Might I suggest you start with mine!
So what is my next step?
Decide where the best place is to listen to things, the iPod is relatively
self contained, other formats listed to the left will need some type of RSS
Podcatcher type of tool. Many of these are available for free on
